5 reasons to grow lettuce, and why home grown tomatoes are delicious - and easy!

This half term Caroline Munroe of My Small Garden is leading two workshops for families on veg growing. Here she shares a bit about what she has planned!

At the half term growing workshop I will be showing young people how to easily grow their own juicy delicious tomatoes starting in February ready to harvest later in summer plus easy tasty lettuce from seed… all you need is a windowsill.

The joy of growing lettuce

Let’s ditch the myth of lettuce being boring.

5 reasons to start growing lettuce today…

1. You can grow it indoors all year round - all you need is a windowsill

2. It grows fast so you can be eating your delicious produce within 6 weeks

3. There are so many varieties to choose from from flat to curly, green to purple, mild to peppery.

4. All you need is a small pot and some compost.

5. It tastes great! There’s a variety for everyone. Plus once you have tasted your own home grown leaves you will be a lettuce fan!  The taste just doesn’t compare to pre packed supermarket lettuce and you will be doing your bit for the environment and helping your body stay healthy with great nutrients…

Totally tasty tomatoes

If you have never picked a warm ripe tomato straight of the vine and popped it in your mouth to experience the absolute deliciousness of flavour then make 2023 the year you change that.

One tiny seed will grow into a bushy healthy tomato plant over the spring and summer and will give you weeks of joy, watching as the small flowers turn into tiny tomatoes and then start to grow and ripen in the sun.

Imagine being able to just pop outside and get a few for lunch or dinner, or just eat them as a super healthy snack.

There are so many varieties and they are easy to grow.

You can even grow one just using a small slice of a shop bought tomato.

They need lots of sunshine, water and food but will reward you with the most wonderful fruit.

Let me show you how easy it is to start indoors on a windowsill and then pot on your growing baby tomato plants into a larger pot or grow bag and set you up for success so you get to experience the pure joy of eating something you have grown from seed. February and March are the time to get sowing.

In future workshops I will be showing you how to grow carrots, sweetcorn, peppers, herbs, strawberries, potatoes and much more.

It’s good (and easy) to grow!
