Can I really do my social media in 1 hour a week....?
I’m offering a workshop on 28th May for busy small business owners which shows you how you can get your social media done in one week - and someone asked, can I really do it in an hour? So I thought I’d outline my approach to explain a bit more about my approach.
There are 3 steps to my approach:
Decide WHEN you are going to spend an hour on your business social media - for me I have to try and bolt it into my week (or I will avoid it) and this is easier if I do it the same time each week (after my friendly running group and before lunch.. sandwiched between nice things to help me feel motivated and positive).
Figure out HOW you can make best use of your hour? Create a plan - this means you don’t spend your hour thinking what to do, you just crack on and do it. Time yourself. Try and get more and more productive each time … if you keep going with this you’ll eventually end up with a really good process that works for you and your business.
Get some SUPPORT and encouragement - if you manage to get your hour done each week that’s a really good achievement. Sometimes it’ll be hard and you’ll have to get through things you’d rather avoid. At these times some support can make the difference between managing to get it done … or packing it in and giving up.
I guess this may leave you curious about what I suggest you could include in your power hour plan that will get enough done?
Social media can feel very overwhelming and its easy to see how you could spend many hours on it. People divide into those that do spend hours on it, and those that feel so overwhelmed they avoid getting started - and end up spending very little time on it. Both strategies can be as ineffective as each other: many people who do spend a lot of time on social find they don’t get the results to merit the time they spend.
The idea of the ‘power hour’ is to give you a manageable place to start. The best social media post is the one that gets done …. not the one that you’ve thought about, but not actually managed to get out.
In designing how I use my hour I’ve borrowed an idea that I saw world champion dog trainer Susan Garrett use (and she runs some amazing training for dog owners - really recommended … if you have a dog!). She recommends using a Success Loop.
My social media success loop is a bit different from hers. As it doesn’t involve dogs at all.
In tackling what to do in my hour I am aiming to build up and improve 3 things:
Consistency - keep regular with my posting activity :)
Quality - build up the value that my posts offer my audience
Quantity - extend my reach by increasing my volume (within the hour)
My plan is designed to mean I am using my time to improve consistency first. So, for example, my first challenge is to get pretty good about doing it once a week!
Then, once I’ve got that down, I’ll start looking at the quality of the posts I get done in that hour, and how I can improve them.
Then I’ll look at how I can get more quantity out the posts I’ve done …. still, all in my hour.
Next in this series of posts I will show how I aim to get a week’s worth of posts done in an hour ;)
