The Events Space @ Harland Works - Six Months on!

It’s been a particularly gloomy autumn - suspected to be one of the wettest on record - so as we all don the extra layers and begrudgingly get our big coats out for winter, we wanted to gather you all around the roaring hearth of a blog post, pour some hot coco and take a look back at the first six months of the new Events Space here at Harland Works.

With November drawing to a close, so to does the first half-year of the Events Space. We welcomed our first booking in June, and since then have been growing exponentially, month by month. With events being programmed at our venue by companies as far afield as Bristol, it certainly appears we’re starting to make a name for ourselves.

At the heart of the Harland Works ethos, of course, is a diverse community of makers, creators and innovators who all show us the importance of creativity and fresh, innovative thinking. It is this concept we want to take forward in the spirit and character of our Events Space. We want to provide our tenants, local businesses, charities, creatives, clubs and artists with a multi-purpose and adaptable space that is at once affordable and stylish.

Since June, The Harland Works Event Space has welcomed bookings from conferences and meetings to workshops and parties - with new potential and possibilities being explored weekly. Joining us regularly are Sheffiled’s own Woodcraft Folk Group. If you’d like to get involved with the Sheffield Woodcraft Folk Group, you can find out more via our recent blog post here.

We are also pleased to welcome bookings from a myriad of charities, who often book the space for meetings, social events and team building days. Most recently, we have been thrilled to host The Sheffield Autistic Society’s photography workshops; just one of the fantastic groups and programmes the Autistic Society offers that make a real difference to adults with Asperger’s and Autism. If you’d like to know more about the work that Sheffield Autistic Society do, or would like to make a donation, you can do so here.

Through our “Charity of the Month” scheme, charities can apply to be our Charity of the Month and receive a free one-off booking of the Events Space! If you or someone you know is involved with a charity that is looking for somewhere to host their next meeting, or if you’ve got an idea for a creative fundraising event or team development session, then we want to hear from you! Each month we’ll share the applications with our tenants here at Harland Works and ask them to select the lucky winner. Sound good? Why not submit an application form here!

At the end of October, Harland Works bid farewell to it’s dedicated and thoughtful Events Coordinator Sarah Webb, who has moved on to pastures new following an exciting promotion at her job with Unlimited Theatre in Leeds. We all wish her the best of luck for the future and congratulate her on the well earned promotion - well done Sarah! As we wave goodbye to Sarah, we welcome John Rowbotham to the Harland Works family. John has taken the reins as Events Coordinator and is looking forward to continuing all of the hard work done over the last six months, and to growing the Events Space to explore new potential, possibilities and programmes of events - including our exciting Festival of Hobbies taking place in January - watch this space for more information!

With new possibilities in mind, it is with great pleasure that we can now announce The Events Space’s first exhibition!

COMING SOON…

This December, Harland Works welcomes “Homecoming” - a collection of paintings by local artist Denise Wrightson. Denise is a landscape painter who’s work focuses on the Peak District here in the UK, and the Olive Groves of Puglia in Southern Italy. ‘Homecoming’ reflects the journey that Denise has been on since her days as an art student and she says “I’ve come home to Sheffield because, as a landscape painter, I couldn’t imagine anywhere i’d rather be than here, on the edge of the Peak District amongst the lovely people of Sheffield. It’s such a friendly, warm and welcoming city with a truly vibrant artist community”

We hope that this will be the first of many artist exhibitions held here and look forward to the future of the Events Space and all the exciting opportunities on the horizon. Here’s to another six!
